The legendary Spanish driver will debut in the Rallycross category with a 600 bhp Volkswagen Polo R purposely built for Rallycross competition by Swedish team, Marklund Motorsport.

Carlos Sainz will face a new challenge in his already long career as he announced his entry in the Rallycross category of X Games in Barcelona. It will be the first time that the Spaniard will drive in such a competition: a six-lap race in a circuit including a spectacular jump, tarmac and dirt, racing against 3 other rivals at the same time. The Rallycross final, one of the main events of the X Games, will take place 19th of May at the ‘Estadio Olímpico’ in Montjuïc Park.

Sainz, twice WRC champion and 2010 Rally Dakar champion, will drive a 600 bhp, 4WD Volkswagen Polo R, built purposely for Rallycross. “I tested the car in Portugal after the last race of the FIA European RallycrossRX Championship. We talked about making changes but I hadn’t decided to race yet. Now, everything is on and I will test it again to achieve a set-up of my liking,” explained Sainz who, for the last two weeks, has been helping Marklund Motorsport to improve the performance of the car. The Volkswagen Polo arrived in Barcelona yesterday from Sweden and, before the race is held, Sainz hopes to test at a similar track to that of the X Games.

Sainz has shown complete enthusiasm with this new project. The Spanish legend will race alongside nine other veterans of the category, with names including Americans Travis Pastrana, Ken Block and Brian Deegan – who have over 40 X Games medals between them -, Finland’s Tomas Heikkinen and Spanish Nani Roma. “The first thing that I have to do is to understand this type of racing. It’s not about racing against the clock, it’s about racing against other drivers and there’s a lot of contact between cars as it’s such a small track. I am here to understand the category and have fun. Besides, I’m really looking forward to it as I’m racing at home.”
