The legendary former WRC and Dakar Rally Champion shows impressive pace in his Volkswagen Polo R ahead of X Games Barcelona

Two-time WRC Champion Carlos Sainz, completed final preparations ahead of X Games Barcelona with Marklund Motorsports yesterday (Thursday, 17th May), testing his Red Bull backed 600 bhp 4WD Volkswagen Polo R in Lleida, east of Barcelona.

After confirming a Rallycross debut in X Games Barcelona against the likes of Travis Pastrana, Ken Block and Brian Deegan, Sainz quickly got to work, finding immediate pace as he looked for his optimum set-up before Sunday’s encounter in front of a bumper home crowd.

“To be honest I don’t know what I am going to find on Sunday but I am happy to be trying a new experience in Motorsport with Marklund this weekend” said Sainz.

“The Volkwagen Polo R is a great car with a good engine. It’s the total package. The Marklund Motorsport team has done a very good job. For me now, it’s about learning about the challenges that lie ahead on Sunday and I’m looking forward to it.”

Swedish rising talent Anton Marklund was on hand to assist Sainz for the day, remaining impressed with the progress that the Spaniard had made on the 1.2 kilometre track.

“It’s been great to work with Carlos. He is such an experienced driver and I think that I can learn a lot from him with regards to the set-up of the car,” said Marklund.

“We have taken some positive steps forward as a team today but Carlos has also been driving better and better. I think that he likes and enjoys the car. This will hopefully show on Sunday when we will be pushing hard for two strong results.”
