Rain denies Anton Marklund and Carlos Sainz of action at X Games Barcelona

Excessive downpours called time on Global Rallycross at X Games Barcelona this afternoon (Sunday, 19th May). Despite the tireless efforts of series organisers to ensure that the event took place for spectators, drivers and teams, the race was finally called off due to the water-logged track.

The only member of the Marklund Motorsport team to get out on track for a handful of laps was two-time WRC Champion Carlos Sainz, who was set to make his Rallycross debut in front of a home crowd.

“I have really enjoyed my week with Marklund Motorsport, although I am disappointed that we will not get to compete here in Barcelona,” said Sainz. “A lot of preparation has gone towards this event so I am sad for the team and the spectators who came to watch today. Unfortunately these things happen though.”

Marklund added, “I’m super disappointed that the rain has had the final say today. I was really looking forward competing in the X Games again with “The King” himself, Carlos Sainz. I think that we both stood a very good chance here in Barcelona due to the competitiveness of our Volkswagen Polo R. Hopefully we can show our full potential in Munich.”

Marklund Motorsport will now concentrate on their return to the FIA European Rallycross Championship in Hungary next weekend (25/26 May).
