Marklund & Ekstrom Place 4th & 5th At X Games Munich 2013

After an afternoon of dramatic racing, Anton Marklund and Mattias Ekström take 4th and 5th places in the first day of competition at X Games Munich 2013, in their Volkswagen Polo Rs.

The race, set-up as a replacement of the cancelled competition in Barcelona was never going to be easy, with the drivers facing extremely wet conditions, deep, slippery gravel, a tough jump and a strong field of competitors. The high impact final saw a restart, multiple large crashes leaving much debris across the track. Marklund, having lost his bumper before the restart also had the front part of his car fully exposed going into the actual race. Both drivers managed to avoid total carnage on the first corner as many of the cars collided, putting Ekström in 4th and Marklund in 5th.

Going into lap two Marklund overtook his team mate as he hit the tyres, sitting in 4th behind Doran, Block and Heikkinen. Ekstrom lost a little time, slipping back to 6th but quickly regained his position, cutting past Foust. Despite a few dramatic slides across the wet tarmac, Marklund and Ekström both held their places, finishing side by side in 4th and 5th place.

Marklund commented: “I’m glad that we made it through the collisions on the first corner both times. The track was so slippery, it was almost a lottery whether you would get round the corners or not. I was 7th into the final and 4th coming out so I’m very happy with that.”

Ekström explained: “I enjoy myself every single time I’m in that car. Of course, I still need some more practice but when I’m
in the car I’m feeling very good and I’m optimistic for the next race tomorrow.”
