Marklund delighted with first RX Supercar season

Front running FIA European Rallycross Championship driver Anton Marklund competed in the final round of the series at the Estering, Germany last weekend to secure seventh in the championship standings in his debut season.

A good run through the heats put Marklund seventh at the Intermediate Classification; unfortunately first lap contact with Timmy Hansen which saw Hansen roll his car spectacularly in the semi-final also caused terminal damage to Marklund’s Volkswagen Polo R, forcing him out of a chance to fight for a place in the final.

“This weekend was really good for us, apart from the semi-final. Again we have proved that we have good pace and when we have some prior experience of the circuit we can be really quick, which is very encouraging for next season,” said the Victory Motorcycles supported driver.

Marklund graduated to the Supercar category at the start of 2013 having won the TouringCar division last season and entered the year not knowing what to expect from competing at the top level in rallycross.

“We have exceeded any expectation we had for ourselves. I was new to Supercar, the car was brand new and the team was new. We didn’t put pressure on ourselves and we have been one of the most consistently fastest runners in the whole championship.”

Several new drivers joined the RallycrossRX Supercar ranks in 2013 including 2003 World Rally Champion Petter Solberg;

“What we have achieved this season has been absolutely incredible, both me and Petter started the season new to Supercar, and we have beaten him in the championship standings by nine points. That is quite an achievement, and I am proud of what we have done.”

Keen to build on his success of 2013, Marklund will continue in Supercar next season and has high hopes;

“Every circuit that we have been too once already with the Supercar we have been really quick, so there is no reason why we cannot be faster again next year with the developments we have in progress, I cannot wait to get started again,” he said.
