Gymkhana GRiD Final Smokes Spain With Biggest Lineup Yet

The Monster Energy Gymkhana GRID: The European Gauntlet finals took place this weekend in Madrid, Spain, and The Kinc team were on hand to witness all the car-drifting, tire-smoking madness.

Having already rampaged through France, Germany, Hungary, the UK, Gymkhana GRiD, the brainchild of Hoonigan-in-chief Ken Block, headed to City of Rock for one final showdown on the asphalt.

Friday was a practice and media day where all the drivers, including drift legend Vaughn Getting Jnr, Spanish favourite Nani Roma and The Kinc clients Liam Doran and Anton Marklund, experimented with their setups while learning the course and putting on some serious smoke shows for the media and TV crews in attendance.

Saturday was race day, and the hoards of Spanish petrol heads present were certainly not left wanting – as the drivers is all classes, RWD, AWD and Super Pro, put on a show to remember.

Australian drifter Luke Fink used his Nascar-engined Nissan PS13 to full effect to claim the win in the RWD class, while the AWD showdown saw Dmitrij Sribnyi pick up where he left off in 2012 with a super-dominant display in his Subaru Impreza. Dmitrij outgunned Vladimir Ulamov in the finals to pick up his second winners cheque, which he gratefully received from Block himself.

In the Super Pro class it was Dakar hero Roma in his Mini who would emerge victorious after he overcame the challenge of Monster Energy teammate Block in the final. Both drivers raced completely different setups with a massive horsepower difference giving Block the edge in his Ford Fiesta. However, Roma, a rookie to the Gymkhana Grid format, capitalised on an uncharacteristic mistake by Block and made two clean passes to take his place on top of the podium – much to the delight of the ecstatic Spanish crowd.

“It’s nice to win in Spain, in front of Ken Block,” said a pumped Nani Roma, as he reflected on his home victory.

“It’s also very special for my team who built this car by hand. It’s even more important to win in front of a lot of TV, plus a lot of the best drift drivers in the world. I feel really good and I’m grateful for the invitation to come and race.”

In the battle for third place, Marklund and his Volkswagen Polo RX would face Doran in his RallycrossRX Citroen DS3. A tightly contested battle saw Doran, who was edged out of his semi final by Block, take the initial advantage on run one. However disaster struck for the British Bomb in his second run when he knocked over two barrels and stalled, allowing Marklund to cross the line and take the final place on the podium.

Looking back on the whole weekend event organiser Block said: “I had an awesome time out here in Spain this weekend. I’m stoked that so many people made the trip out to catch the action. I had a lot of fun going up against the All Wheel Drive guys.”
